Los Hornos Argentinian Flavors

When you’re a food writer constantly exploring Kansas City’s diverse dining scene, sometimes all you need is a light bite and something refreshing to sip on. That’s exactly what I found at Los Hornos, an Argentinian restaurant tucked away in North Kansas City—a spot that quickly became the perfect backdrop for a productive snack/work session with my friend.

We both decided on smoothies to kick things off. My friend ordered the Detox ($8), a vibrant green mix of spinach, cucumber, and lemon. It was crisp and invigorating, with the cucumber adding a subtle freshness while the lemon brought just the right amount of brightness. I went with the Organic 4 Berry Blend ($8), a delicious medley of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. The flavors were well-balanced- a blend of sweet, tart, and utterly satisfying. Every sip was a reminder of why fresh ingredients can elevate even the simplest drink.

The smoothies alone could’ve made the visit worthwhile, but my friend decided to order a vegetarian empanada to snack on ($4.30). When it arrived, the savory aromas hit us first. The empanada was steaming hot, with a golden, flaky crust that looked as good as it smelled. My friend took the first bite and immediately raved about the flavorful filling, which was hearty without being heavy.

Had time been on our side, we would have stayed longer to explore more of Los Hornos’ menu, which features an array of Argentinian classics that looked mouthwatering from our quick scan. From empanadas to sandwiches and more, it’s clear that this place is one worth lingering in—next time, we’ll make sure to do just that.

Los Hornos is located at 10004 N Ambassador Drive, Kansas City, MO.

China Wok

With so many Chinese restaurants named China Wok scattered around Kansas City, it might be easy to overlook one. But trust me, this China Wok stands out, not just for its bold flavors but for its quick, satisfying meals that hit all the right notes.

I stopped in for lunch and ordered my usual: spicy shrimp fried rice with extra shrimp and no egg. I’ve had this dish countless times at other spots, but China Wok has a way of making it their own. The rice was perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of spice—bold without overpowering—and every bite was packed with juicy, well-cooked shrimp. The extra shrimp I requested? Generously delivered.

Since it was a lunch order, it came with a choice of crab rangoon or spring rolls. I opted for the spring rolls, which arrived piping hot with a satisfyingly crispy exterior. The filling was fresh and flavorful, pairing perfectly with the sweet and tangy dipping sauce. My meal also included a bowl of hot and sour soup, which was thick, tangy, and full of umami. It was a warm, comforting complement to the spicy fried rice.

What always impresses me most—besides the flavors—is the prices and the speed. The food comes out hot and fast, perfect for a lunch break that doesn’t sacrifice quality for convenience. Plus, my entire meal cost $14.40. Simply put, China Wok is dishing out tasty meals and great deals.

China Wok is located at 6048 NW Barry Rd. Kansas City, MO 64154.
