The Mavericks hosted their first monthly reading for Mac’s Power Play Reading Club on Friday, November 15, 2o24 at William Yates Elementary School (3600 S Davidson Ave. Independence, MO 64055).

The winning classroom was Madison Boynton’s class, who got a visit from mascot, Mac, and forwards Landon McCallum and Damien Giroux—all for a reading afternoon.

Here’s a little background about Mac’s Power Play Reading Club:

The program runs from October through February, with incentives extending into March.
It’s designed to encourage classroom reading with adaptable goals and exciting rewards.
Teachers receive reading logs for individual students and classrooms, bookmarks, a classroom poster, and Certificates of Achievement for student milestones.
Students track their reading minutes each month, with K-2 students counting minutes read aloud to them and grades 3-5 counting minutes spent reading to younger siblings.
Teachers submit total class reading minutes monthly and select standout students for individual awards.
Each month, the top classroom receives a visit from Mac and Mavericks players, who read to students and distribute Minsky’s Pizza coupons.
The overall top classroom from October to February wins a pizza party with players and free weekday game tickets for students’ families in March.
Teachers of top classrooms receive additional resources, including lesson plans from Teachers Created Materials.
Tracking starts October 1, with monthly reports due the first week of each following month.

Fifth-grade teacher Madison Boynton’s class took October’s Top Classroom of the Month honors, logging an impressive 37,610 minutes—about an hour per student daily. The top student in the class was named Willow, who had read 6,159 minutes. Over 3,200 kids from 60 schools are participating in this year’s club, setting ambitious reading goals and working toward exciting monthly and grand prizes, including a pizza party sponsored by Minsky’s Pizza in March.
