The Fray took the Truman stage Friday night, marking their first Kansas City performance since going on an indefinite hiatus in 2016. Now comprised of Joe King, Dave Welsh, and Ben Wysocki, the band returned in full form, proving that their pop-rock sound is as great as ever.

Opening the night was Rett Madison, whose stunning vocals captivated the crowd. A standout from her set was “Skydiving,” a groovy yet emotionally charged track inspired by her fear of heights, leaving the audience, including myself, completely mesmerized. Her opening set had just the right vibes to transition into the Fray.

The Fray kicked off their set with “Angeleno Moon,” a high-energy track from their latest EP, The Fray Is Back. Even after the long break, the song still felt like classic Fray, though with a more mature sound. The rest of the night was a well-balanced mix of their beloved hits, new music and covers. One highlight for me was “Never Say Never,” which had the audience singing along, caught up in the emotion of the moment. The show came to an end with their most well-known track “How to Save a Life”—a perfect way to end the night filled with nostalgia.

Our photographer Tommy Vean was there to capture the whole thing:
