The Zhou B Art Foundation brings historic contemporary art to the KC scene

With dozens of studios and floors of exhibits, there is something for everyone, from the common Kansas Citian to the culture snob.

The Zhou B Art Foundation has been transformed from the historic Crispus Attucks School into an expansive gallery and creative space for artists and the community alike. Now, this nonprofit aims to empower artists and support creative exploration.

With 45 studio spaces, it has the capacity to foster a community of artists with many different mediums and styles. Each artist’s space has substantial windows and hardwood floors but leaves the walls blank for the occupant to adorn.

Most artists moved in at the beginning of March, including Jean McGuire who creates paintings from oil and canvas.

Jean Mcguire

Often taking inspiration from vintage photos, Jean McGuire paints people from another time.

“It’s not just the space and the lighting, it’s the energy,” McGuire says. “The energy of the space is great.”

In addition to studios, there is a sculpture garden and exhibition space for rotating featured artists and the founders. The entire building has a raw and refined architecture with light woods and walls, alongside concrete and open ceilings.

The founding brothers ShanZuo and DaHuang Zhou are contemporary artists who got their start in China before moving to the United States in 1986. Rising to fame by leading the contemporary art movement, their style is abstract and reflective of ancient Chinese cave paintings.

Not only will this space be a collaborative center for artists, but it will also engage the community with three private event spaces. Its focus on maintaining a support system for artists manifests in spaces that showcase the finest creations of local artists while still giving a light to each artist housed there.

“Kansas City is one of the most beautiful cities in America with an abundance of arts and culture,” the Zhou brothers said in a welcome letter. “So many creative individuals live here, and we felt great chemistry with the community the first time we visited this city.”
