To raise support and awareness for Children’s Mercy Hospital, over 3,000 people will be participating in the Hospital Hill Run this Saturday, June 1. Runners or walkers will be directed through downtown Kansas City starting at 7 a.m. at Crown Center, in a 5K, 10K, or half marathon, making it a route accessible to many fitness levels.
The organizers from the Kansas City Sports Commission are partnering with Children’s Mercy by donating a portion of all registration fees directly to supporting the health of local children. One Kansas Citian who has had their life changed through the support of the Hospital Hill Run is nine-year-old Arrow.
Arrow spent the first years of her life in and out of Children’s Mercy after being born without a thymus. With help from Children’s Mercy’s support and care, she aspires to become a doctor and will be cheering on runners with her parents and pediatric endocrinologist. As a new addition from the 2023 run, Arrow represents the need and impact that Children’s Mercy has on the Kansas City community.

“It not only generates thousands of dollars, but there’s also the awareness component. We’re shining a light on Children’s Mercy and the important work they’re doing in our community,” KC Sports Commission Director of Communication Elliott Scott says. “On race day, there will be 300 children in hospital beds where people will run by, and I think that’s just so indicative of the need and the importance of supporting this organization.”
All participants will receive a medal, Hospital Hill Run apparel, and entry to the finish line festival, featuring free food, drinks, and local band Retroactive. There is also a VIP space for those who raised $100 or more featuring a private bathroom, special gear check, and more.
Vendors will host booths at the finish line with exclusive merch, such as Fleet Feet’s Scandinavian running brand, Karhu and Charlie Hustle’s limited edition Big Slick T-shirts.
“It goes beyond personal, it goes beyond charity,” Scott says. “The people running or walking inspire others, whether family members, friends, or strangers spectating. It really is about sharing our community into one that engages in a healthy and active lifestyle.”
Whether participating or not, everyone should plan for the road closure from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on June 1 along the route from Truman Rd to 63rd St.
