Whitey Morgan and the 78’s is an unmistakable honky-tonk country band who swung through Kansas City Friday night during their summer tour. Their blue-collar, rowdy, tale-telling songs were the perfect soundtrack to end a long work week and kick-start the Memorial Day weekend. A protégé of Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and Jamey Johnson, Whitey Morgan and The 78s have certainly made a name for themselves in the country music scene, carrying the torch for the new generation of outlaws.
The Comancheros are a southern rock band with all the grit and attitude to go with it. The rowdy outlaw trio started right on time, not leaving the audience to wonder where the rockstars were for even a moment. From the door-kickin boot stomp first note to heavy solos, their high energy never stopped. If Sturgis had a theme song, The Comacheros would have written it.
