KC’s own Momedian Nicole Burch releases new special Mama Drama
About 15 years ago, local comedian Nicole Burch made the move from Kansas City out to Los Angeles, in an effort to further push her comedic career. Within her second day in LA, she was already auditioning for and being accepted by the Groundlings Theater, which has paved the way for many big names, such as Lisa Kudrow and Will Ferrell.
Her initial hit, The 7 Guys You Date Before You Get Married, was created while she was at the Groundlings Theater, sparking her career. What she assumed would be a week or two long show, quickly turned into months of sold out shows. Having not yet determined her chosen route to share her comedy with the world, The 7 Guys You Date solidified her love for stand-up comedy.
While spending more time out in Los Angeles and being surrounded by celebrities everywhere, Burch found herself out on a date with one. Having completely humiliated herself on said date, Burch felt as though there was nothing better to do than to write a comedy special. Thus, Never Been Kissed, her first comedy special, was born.
Burch had much mom content to create her new special, Mama Drama. This time around, the production was taken care of for Burch, which allowed her to focus much more on the writing.
Though most female comedians don’t have kids, Burch was blessed with a little unexpected joy from a one-night stand with a friend. The special follows her unique story from the moment that she found out she was pregnant, to where she is in the present day. Burch says that the story is one that really exemplifies making the best out of any situation.
Though her style remains the same, Burch says that her content pool to draw from has grown immensely since becoming a mom.
“I would definitely say that my style is self-deprecating storytelling. I’m a mom now, the subject content has changed. It used to be how hard dating is, and now it’s just making fun of me, like, shuffling my way through motherhood.”
Being a comedian and also a mom, Burch says that a majority of managers wouldn’t even consider her for a tour because of the restrictions she has. However, she has a PR tour through a few major cities in the Midwest, starting March 25 to promote her new special. Though she does not have anything scheduled for Kansas City, she will be performing live in a few cities.
“My favorite people to interview with is anybody in Kansas City. I’m having more fun on this phone call than I have on, like, ten Los Angeles conversations.”
