Sprint axing 800 jobs
After being the business news darling and finding itself the subject of a bidding war earlier this year, when satellite TV provider Dish got into a bidding war with the Japanese company Softbank, Sprint has returned to headlines for bad news. The company announced today that it’s eliminating 800 customer-service jobs. The good news locally is that the eliminated won’t be from the company’s Overland Park headquarters. About half of the cuts will come from Texas offices in Irving, Temple and Fort Worth.
The company has a total workforce of roughly 40,000, including 7,000 local employees. In July, Softbank bought 78 percent of Sprint for $21.6 billion. A Sprint spokeswoman told The Kansas City Business Journal that the 800 job cuts didn’t have anything to do with the acquisition. “The decision was not related to any of the recent transactions,” she told the paper.
