KC Jazz Vespers returns Sunday to the First Baptist Church of Kansas City for a new, free monthly series, beginning with the Roger Wilder Quartet. Wilder is an anchor of the Kansas City jazz scene and one of the area’s most versatile and powerfully inventive musicians — he drives the piano in Sons of Brasil, delightfully vamps on keyboards for the People’s Liberation Big Band, and backs singer Angela Hagenbach. (He also hosts The Jazz Geek on KKFI 90.1 and teaches at UMKC.) Joining Wilder are David Chael, whose sharp and supple solos make him one of the stars of the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra’s sax section, and young titans Seth Lee on bass and Sam Wisman on drums.

KC Jazz Vespers with the Roger Wilder Quartet, 6 p.m. Sunday, January 10, at First Baptist Church of Kansas City (100 West Red Bridge Road), free admission.
