Jazz Beat: Broadway Jazz Orchestra and Prohibition Hall Jazz Quartet, at Prohibition Hall
Prohibition Hall, in downtown’s Louis Curtiss Building, bears the perfect name for a jazz club, and jazz gets featured billing Wednesday nights. It starts with drummer Jim Lower’s Broadway Jazz Orchestra — named for the now-defunct jazz club where the band launched — followed by the Prohibition Hall Jazz Quartet, featuring Ryan Thielman and friends. Thielman is a dynamic young trumpet player, often heard in late-night jams at the Mutual Musicians Foundation. He is joined by keyboardist Paul Roberts, bassist James Ward and drummer Brad Williams for an ensemble that tags a modern twist onto jazz standards, with the emphasis on sly rhythm and high energy.
Broadway Jazz Orchestra, 7 p.m., and the Prohibition Hall Jazz Quartet featuring Ryan Thielman and friends, 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, at Prohibition Hall (1118 McGee), free admission.
