Three local female voices are reuniting this Saturday for an Amy Winehouse tribute at the Uptown Theater

This Saturday at the Uptown, three local babes will be paying homage to one of pop music’s all-time babes, Amy Winehouse. Lauren Krum (the Grisly Hand), Julia Haile (the Good Foot, Diverse Jazz) and Danielle Metz will be performing two hours of Winehouse’s songs with the company of a full backing band.
Though the three women aren’t officially a cover band, they have been performing covers of Winehouse songs for just over a year, Metz says.
“We started last year at the Hooligan Holiday show. It was originally the one-year anniversary of her death, I think, and Rico [Dejole, Hooligan Holiday organizer] wanted to bring together a lot of the ska and different kinds of music, and some of the covers that she had done kind of linked the theme of the show together.”
So Dejole rounded up an eclectic musical group and talked them into learning Winehouse’s songs, and things took off from there.
“He [Dejole] just kind of looped together a bunch of singers from around town, and we all just really liked working together when we practiced, and we love the music, so it just kind of grew into what it is now,” Metz says. “We just did a 30-minute set at the Hooligan Holiday last year, and then we just kept getting booked. People just saw it and liked it and wanted us to play again, so we have been. We haven’t even really had time to give ourselves a name.”
Saturday night will feature a one-hour DJ set from Boss Hooligan Soundsystem, followed by a show that will last around two hours and include an intermission.
“We’re each singing 10 songs,” Metz says. “They are all Amy Winehouse songs – or they are all Amy Winehouse songs that she has covered. We do some reggae, some ska, some old 1960s covers, all of which are pretty popular or well-known. They’re from her albums, from YouTube… We’re not gonna do anything far-fetched. It’ll all be pretty recognizable. We have a ton of fun.”
