Yuck is at the Riot Room this Saturday

Despite divorcing from frontman Daniel Blumberg in early 2013, English alt-rock band Yuck has elected to soldier on, much to the delight of nostalgic 1990s-rock enthusiasts.
In September, Yuck released its second album – and its first without Blumberg – titled Glow & Behold, with guitarist Max Bloom stepping up to take lead vocals. And though the 11 tracks on Glow revel in fuzzy guitars and give what the band must have considered heartfelt odes to that cherished subculture of ’90s alt rock, it mostly seems like Yuck tried to get as close as it could to its 2011 self-titled debut.
Where Yuck stood like an unabashed, honest-to-God, best-of-the-1990s reincarnation, Glow feels more like the album your mom would buy you if she was trying to understand your taste in music. She’s close, and it’s sweet, but it’s not quite right. Still, Yuck appears to be surviving well enough – and the band’s Riot Room gig should give us an idea of how well Bloom does as the man leading the fight.
