Further Review

“It’s not even Halloween, and we have nothing to look forward to, folks. K-State can’t beat anybody that’s any good. KU can’t beat anyone at all. Mizzou, just like the Chiefs’ defense, has absolutely no clue whatsoever in defending the forward pass. We’re only seven games into this NFL season, and our Chiefs — let’s admit it, folks — they are done. It’s over. The Chiefs are absolutely going to miss the playoffs now for the fifth year in a row. It’s horrible. It’s pathetic. It’s the kind of stuff they talk about in Cincinnati.”

“Yes, I’ll run KC’s marathon. High standards and lofty goals have been a staple of my life philosophy…. With that in mind, I am committed to running the Humana River Crown Plaza Marathon on Nov. 2. All 26.2 miles. This is not a joke…. The thought of me running in the Humana River Crown Plaza Marathon on Nov. 2 seems to be making a lot of people laugh.”
Jason Whitlock, The Kansas City Star, February 6 and 17

“I’m living up to my pledge. I’ll be at the start line at 7:30 a.m. Nov. 2. I plan on walking (I never said I was running the marathon) as far as I can for as long as I can.”
Whitlock, The Star, October 19

GH: Whitlock’s “high standards and lofty goals” have been replaced by the reality that he knows nothing about the discipline and sacrifice it takes to train for and complete a marathon …or about taking responsibility for his statements. At least The Star sold a lot of those skinny bobblehead dolls.

“Kansas City, I’m begging you, quit feeding me. Treat me like the bear in the zoo. You can fantasize about what my jaws would look like munching on the slab of spare ribs you marinated overnight and slow-roasted for four hours, but don’t force them on my plate. It’s dangerous, and it’s going to be costly for me come Nov. 2.”
— Whitlock, The Star, October 19

GH: First Whitlock says he never said he’d run the marathon. Then he blames locals for him showing up on race day weighing 325 pounds. Whitlock has evolved into nothing more than a well-paid circus act, and his words should be treated as such.
