Here’s what we know about Frazier Glenn Miller, the unabashed racist arrested in Sunday’s shooting spree

The last time The Pitch wrote about Frazier Glenn Miller, it was days ahead of the 2010 general election in which Miller was a write-in candidate for the U.S. Senate. 

Miller, the fringiest of fringe candidates, had created something of a firestorm back then when broadcasters balked at airing his virulently racist campaign advertisements despite laws that generally require television and radio stations to give political candidates fair access to the airwaves. Regulators determined that Miller (also known as Frazier Glenn Cross) wasn’t a serious candidate and that broadcasters could tell the devout anti-Semite to go pound sand in rural Aurora, Missouri.

Pitch managing editor Justin Kendall wrote at the time that hopefully after the 2010 election, Miller “fades in the darkness with his hood, white robe, Confederate battle flag and burning cross.”

Unfortunately, it appears that Miller didn’t go quietly in the night, having re-emerged in the public spotlight as the only known suspect in Sunday’s shooting spree at two Johnson County Jewish centers that left three people dead. Miller was booked into a Johnson County jail Sunday afternoon, suspected of first-degree murder.

Miller, a military veteran who served in Vietnam as a Green Beret, is no stranger to the world of seething racism and anti-Semitism that is alive and well in the Midwest. The 73-year-old is well-known by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups and the people who lead them. According to the SPLC, Miller started the Carolina Knights, an arm of the Ku Klux Klan in the southeast United States in the 1980s. SPLC ended up suing Miller for harassing blacks and immigrants at the time.

Miller went on to start the White Patriot Party, another Christian Identity group that espouses white supremacy. Authorities went after Miller when they discovered that he was plotting the murder of SPLC founder Morris Dees and inciting violence against Jews and blacks. Miller was arrested in a trailer park in Ozark, Missouri. Miller did a three-year stretch in federal prison, but copped a deal with prosecutors in which he would testify against other racist movers and shakers. Specifically, he testified in court that the founder of the Order, Robert Mathews, has given Miller $200,000 to start the White Patriot Party, according to an SPLC report. The Order was a white supremacist group in the early 1980s whose members were involved in the murder of Jewish talk-radio host Alan Berg in Denver.

Having moved to Aurora, Missouri, in the years that followed his prison sentence, Miller wanted to run for Congress for Missouri’s 7th District. Miller couldn’t get on the ballot because the Republicans, Democrats and Libertarians wouldn’t claim him as their own, so Miller ran as an independent write-in candidate. He received only 23 votes in a race that Roy Blunt won.

His 2010 bid for public office was also not received warmly by voters.

In recent years, Miller seems to mostly brood in rural Missouri, where he is a prolific contributor to racist message board Vanguard News Network. It’s there where he comments under the handle Rounder and has more than 12,000 posts to his name. But he seems to be a divisive figure among fellow anti-Semites, some of whom tease Miller for his cooperation with the feds against members of the Order.

Miller appeared to have been writing on the VNN forum yesterday before his arrest, giving fellow racists an update on Craig Cobb, an anti-Semite from Maryville, Missouri, who was arrested last year in North Dakota for terrorizing residents there. 

Miller’s writings at the VNN site were foul and gruesome and include frequent calls for action against Jews, including one just a week ago.

“Get up off your knees – slither out of your hidden cellars – stand erect and boldly face the rising sun of the new day that’s here,” Miller wrote. “Nothing meaningful to lose really, but your chains. Knowing what you know, is life really so sweet, you’ll live it as miserable, dwindling slaves to the (goddamned) jewbeasts.”

The post signs off with a “Heil Hitler,” which reportedly was his same utterance Sunday afternoon as he was led away from the crime scene in handcuffs.
