Dirty Dozen Brass Band

Few events can rival the somber dignity and jubilant elation of a New Orleans jazz funeral. As a relic from a time when the Crescent City’s black social clubs were often the sole source of support for family funeral expenses, these public processions were one part wake and one part celebration, depending on whether the club’s brass band was heading to the cemetery or returning from it. Born of such traditions, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band has picked up a few more along the way by tapping into the city’s rich jazz, blues, funk, gospel and zydeco heritage. Since 1977, the Dirty Dozen has worked with everyone from Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock to David Bowie and the Grateful Dead, earning a reputation as a hard-hitting, high-energy live act. Now celebrating its 25th year with Medicated Magic, a joyous affair that enlists high-profile guests such as New Orleans legend Dr. John, DJ Logic and Norah Jones, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band continues to guide kindred spirits to a musical promised land.
