Last night, the Kansas City Police Department announced that it had taken into custody a suspect in the rash of mysterious highway shootings in Kansas City in recent weeks. At a press conference this afternoon, Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker revealed the identity of that suspect and announced charges against him.

His name is Mohammed Whitaker. A 27-year-old resident of Grandview, he’s being held on $1 million bond, charged with 18 felony counts: two for injuring citizens by shooting at a motor vehicle, seven for shooting at a motor vehicle, and nine for armed criminal action.

The Star contacted Whitaker’s father in Cairo, Illinois, who told the paper his son graduated from high school in Moberly, Missouri, and worked at OptumRx, a medical supply company in Overland Park.

Police had been surveilling Whitaker for the last week while gathering evidence and testing ballistics. Police chief Darryl Forte declined to discuss motive.
