Pup, last night at the Granada (photos, setlist)
Pup
With Casper Skulls and Ratboys
The Granada
Monday, May 6
Despite the impending possibility of dangerous thunderstorms, tornados, and a deluge of rain, the Granada was packed last night and ready for Pup, a catchy punk foursome from Toronto.
Pup’s new album, Morbid Stuff, represented a large chunk of the show, and it seemed that many in the crowd were quite familiar already with many of those songs. The entire front row, crammed against a barricade, sang along so loud as to nearly drown out the band. Many a high-five was slapped, often to strangers. The members of Pup fed off the energy, bouncing around the stage as if on trampolines. The audience might’ve been damp physically, but its spirits were not.

Openers Ratboys and Casper Skulls were utterly charming and pop-inflected, providing a counterpoint to Pup’s angst-ridden lyrics, especially in the case of Ratboys, with songs like “GL” (“it stands for ‘good luck,’ explained frontwoman and singer Julia Steiner) and “Elvis in the Freezer,” about having to put your deceased pet in the freezer while everyone processes their feelings.
