Game On

SAT 6/26
Earlier this month, the KC Krunch became the Midwest Division Champions of the National Women’s Football Association. They did so with a vulgar display of power, beating the Denton Stampede 56-0. Now, following a well-earned bye, the Krunch are preparing for their first-ever playoff game. Last year, in its inaugural season, the Krunch missed a trip to the playoffs by one point. But prospects are good this year as the team heads into the postseason with a 6-2 record. In fact, the players are attempting to rustle up some donations for travel expenses in case they advance to the next playoff level. They’re just three wins away from the July 31 championship game at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
But first thing’s first. Saturday’s game against the 7-1 Nashville Dream starts at 4 p.m. at J.C. Harmon High School (2400 Steele Road, just off the 18th Street Expressway in Kansas City, Kansas). Admission costs $15 for adults and $5 for anyone younger than 18. For tickets, call 913-906-9496; see www.womensfootball association.com for more league information — or at least to print out the awesome Little Girl’s Football Coloring Book, which we definitely recommend for any pint-sized punters you might know. — Sarah Smarsh

THU 6/24
Few promotions draw fans to ballparks like free bobbleheads. Although the little dolls have been around for years, by all accounts the San Francisco Giants are responsible for their recent resurgence in popularity. Thanks, guys. Something about the creepy miniatures possesses fans to collect, trade and artfully arrange them on dashboards. We think it’s weird. Those of you who don’t, pay close attention: The latest bobblehead giveaway is at the Kansas City T-Bones game against the Sioux Falls Canaries at 7:05 p.m. Thursday, when Cabela’s hands out 3,000 quivering mini versions of manager “Dirty” Al Gallagher. We can only imagine the bidding war after supplies run out — good thing tickets cost only $4.50 to $13.50. CommunityAmerica Ballpark is located at State Avenue and 110th Street in Kansas City, Kansas. Call 913-328-2255 for tickets or more information. — Annie Fischer
Summertime
Surf’s up, sort of.
SAT 6/26
OK, so there’s not actually a beach at Lake Jacomo, but that just means the beach party for Lake Fest 2004 will be more beachesque. At any rate, Saturday’s Lake Fest at Lake Jacomo (22807 Woods Chapel Road) entitles you to as much fun as you can handle for $7 a car or $5 a person (if you park elsewhere and walk). Onstage is live music by the KC Retro Band, and the Summer of Fun Beach Party is put on by KCMO 94.9 (Oldies 95). For the kids, there’s an inflatable moonwalk and face painting, and though there’s no swimming, there are boat rides. The festivities get started around 5 p.m. and end with fireworks at 9:30. For more information, call 816-795-8200.— Sarah Steele
Take a Hike
SAT 6/26
The Kansas City Outdoor Club meets at 9 a.m. Saturday at River Bluff Nature Reserve (south side of the Missouri River east of Missouri 291) for a 2-and-a-half-mile hike through dense woods, up steep hillsides and near limestone cliffs. They recommend good hiking boots, long pants, insect repellent and drinking water. You don’t have to be a member to participate — just crazy. Call 816-746-4650 for more information. — Fischer
