Jazz Beat: Brian Steever Group, at the Westport Coffeehouse

The old theater downstairs at the Westport Coffeehouse has been a home to jazz ensembles – sometimes regularly, sometimes sporadically – for decades. Each Thursday night this July, it is home to the Jazz Underground Series. This week, dynamic young drummer Brian Steever heads a trio with vibraphonist Peter Schlamb and bassist Bob Bowman. A favorite in numerous KC jazz ensembles, Steever particularly stands out as one of two drummers driving the rhythm in the group Parallax. Schlamb stars in his own quartet monthly at Take Five. Bowman’s bass has been anchoring jazz groups probably as long as the coffeehouse has been presenting them. When these three musicians come together here, charisma and dynamism are assured.
