Zine lovers: Pioneers Press has you covered with nearly 2,000 titles in Lawrence this weekend

  • Pioneer Press Facebook
  • All weekend long.

Last year, Pioneers Press – a small-press publishing house based in Lansing, Kansas – was awarded a Rocket Grant to help fund a traveling zine gallery and shop. The pair behind the operation, Jessica and Thaddeus Christian, have dubbed it the Hard 50 Farm Zine Mobile, and they’re debuting it this weekend in Lawrence. It boasts almost 2,000 literary and visual zines.

From the Facebook event page:

Our collection covers a range of subjects including: artist books; street art/stencil graffiti; photography; comics/graphic novels; socially-engaged printmaking; autobiography; travel; and cruelty-free and DIY lifestyles. These publications are almost entirely hand-crafted, using methods such as woodcut, letterpress, screen-printing, collage art, photocopying and offset press printing.

In concert with the Wonder Fair’s YWAs: Young Women Artists exhibition, an expanded selection of feminist zines will be featured throughout the weekend. All zines are free to browse, and some are available for purchase to support the Hard 50 Farm Zine Mobile and radical publishing.

They’ll be parked outside Wonder Fair (803 Massachusetts) starting Thursday night. Here’s the sched:

Thursday, June 26: 9 p.m. – midnight (coincides with Girls In Front music showcase @ Wonder Fair Gallery)
Friday, June 27: 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. (coincides with YWAs: Young Women Artists exhibition opening reception @ Wonder Fair Gallery)
Saturday, June 28: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Sunday, June 29: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Special Zine Mobile Launch party)
