Pole Positions

Since June, amateur and professional artists have been filling a spacious West Bottoms loft for an event called Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, where life drawing and cocktail sipping go down in equal parts. Tonight, though, attendees are in for a spectacle that might still their pens and leave their mouths agape. That’s because the Anti-Art School swaps the usual burlesque-chick models for Gravity Plays Favorites, a St. Louis troupe of acrobatic pole dancers. Michelle and Katrina, the troupe’s founders, met as dancers at Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club. Nobody ever saw Demi Moore grip a pole between her neck and shoulder and slide upside-down from 12 feet in the air, but these women can do that while chewing gum and unhooking their bras at the same time.Dr. Sketchy’s happens at 1331 Union. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the Gravity Plays Favorites performers will pose for life drawing at 6:30. (Bring your own art supplies; at a past event, someone used an Etch-A-Sketch.) Expect a full aerial pole-dancing performance at 8:30. Drinks and food are for sale at the loft. You must be 18 to attend, and it’s $7 at the door ($5 if you e-RSVP in advance to drsketchyskcmo@gmail.com).
