Everything Is Illuminated

In muted tones, Kevin Sink‘s new book of photography, Illuminating Kansas City, radically reinterprets urban space. By contrasting architecture with the natural elements surrounding it, Sink imagines the city’s most famous structures as interconnected units of an organic whole. Landmarks such as Union Station and the City Market are not seen, the way urban structures often are, as unmoving edifices at odds with human needs. Sink instead suggests the city’s buildings as branches of the natural world. But where’s the human complexity? In this respect, Sink presents a narrative whose resplendent visual elements must be measured against the quixotic thrust of its theme.
