Mixtape Series V.1

As with a political party, electronic music doesn’t die. It mutates. Classic, four-to-the-floor, bass-kicking dance music continues to ooze new paths through the back alleys and proliferate in the shadowy corners of the musical mainstream. The subculture of electronic music, which began in the 1980s as a small, closely knit cult in major American cities, now includes an army of glowstick-carrying members across the globe. (Young Parisians, in particular, go crêpe-shit over the music, which was originally derived from disco.) Kansas City, too, has a small, if not growing, scene of turntable misfits and dance-happy fans. This weekend, Galactic Soul Tribe, a local three-member group consisting of SoulStutter, Z-Sonic and Bassman Spliff, is bringing the scene together for a two-day festivus of heavy bass, sweat-stained shirts, blistered feet and otherworldly musical inspiration. The first night of the event, dubbed Mixtape Series V.1, is at Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club and features techno, dirty house, breakstep and tribal house. Mike’s Tavern hosts the second night (“Side B”), which features Barbaric Merits, the DJ/producer duo of Dublow 7 and Mythik; veteran DJ Tony Markham; and KRSP, among others.
