V-Day Events

People harboring erotic women-in-prison fantasies have scores of titillating S&M titles (such as Caged Heat 2: Stripped of Freedom) to choose from. However, anyone willing to trade catfights for insights can screen What I Want My Words to Do to You at 7 p.m. at the YWCA (1017 North Sixth Street in Kansas City, Kansas). The screening is part of a string of events benefiting V-Day, the movement to stop violence against women and girls. For the documentary, V-Day founder Eve Ensler conducted a writers’ workshop with female prisoners. The footage alternates between the prisoners’ own readings and dramatic interpretations by actors such as Marisa Tomei and Rosie Perez. The movie is free, but donations are encouraged. The similarly formatted production Any One of Us: Words From Prison (7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 26) follows a staging of Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues (7:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 25) as part of the V-Day schedule. Both shows take place at UMKC’s Pierson Auditorium in the University Center (5000 Holmes). Tickets for the live performances cost $12 to $17. Call 816-235-6222 for ticket information.
