Go Bald for Good

You’ve never heard of St. Baldrick’s? Don’t worry, the Vatican hasn’t, either. (The patron saint of hairstylists, by the way, is Martin de Porres.) But the fictitious saint — the name is a play on bald and St. Patrick — will be an inspiration for good works today when the St. Baldrick’s Foundation raises money for childhood cancer research. Volunteer barbers and stylists will shave heads at Famous Sam’s in Shawnee (13223 West Shawnee Mission Parkway). Donors can register, beginning at 11:30 a.m., to have their domes completely shaved (or trimmed very close). The less brave can pledge money to one of the shorn. Shears begin buzzing at 1 p.m. and won’t stop until the very last scalp has been shaved. Organizer Cathryn Hamilton, who lost an infant to cancer in 2006, hopes to raise at least $5,000.
