Neon

When Edwin Morales, better known as DJ Konsept, moved to Chicago in May 2007, he left a bevy of local admirers in his wake — and a promise to return. Good DJs, like good friends, keep their promises. Neon, a Thursday-night dance party in Lawrence founded by Morales and partner DJ Cruz, has been one of the most successful and long-running dance parties in the area. DJ Cruz has been keeping Neon bumping (with help from Iggy Baby) while Morales has been up in Chi-town, spinning at the club Subterranean. But Morales still has plenty of comrades-in-turntables across the Kansas City area, who will no doubt welcome his temporary homecoming this weekend. On Friday, ’80s dance enthusiasts can break out their bangs, and hip-hoppers can gleefully grab their crotches as Morales makes a triumphal return to Kansas City for one night of Neon featuring some very special guests. DJ Cruz and local crew Nomathmatics will also be on hand to spin and to welcome Druzzi, a member of NYC band the Rapture, who’s playing a DJ set. Who says you can’t go home again?
