Hangin’ Out with Monsters

Crossroads resident Tyler Coey combines traditional design and painting techniques with contemporary street art and hipster toy design, producing cool dimensional objects illuminated with an edgy, illustrative style. “There will be some designer vinyl,” Coey says. “Also, I’ve got a line of toys coming out for the South American children’s market — kid’s meal toys — so I’m hoping to have a big batch of those on display as well. I also have two-dimensional pieces, canvas work, cut-to-shape things, a bunch of mixed media. The theme of the show is — a lot of the pieces are monsters or people impersonating monsters: monster suits, straight-up monsters.” The exhibit, Hangin’ Out With Monsters, opens tonight at the Plenum Space Gallery at 504 East 18th Street, second floor; viewings after tonight are by appointment, through August 28.
