Burying Bulbs
Braving unseasonably chilly temperatures, an enthusiastic group of inner-city students pulled on their stocking caps, bundled up in parkas and planted more than 3,000 tulip bulbs at 54th Street and Troost last month. With winter approaching, most Kansas Citians aren’t thinking past the greenery of the Christmas season, but those kids — and the dedicated volunteers at Tulips on Troost — already have their eyes on spring. Once the snow thaws, those papery bulbs at 54th Street will blossom into a rainbow of colors. But with a goal of 1 million blooms by 2010, the group needs all hands in the dirt today as it plants along Troost Avenue at five locations. Meet up at 10 a.m. at the launching spot of 54th and Troost, where volunteers will divide into groups. But be sure to show up at the 85th Street bridge for a free lunch from B.B.’s Lawnside BBQ at noon. You can also get a sweet treat at Coffee Break (5400 Troost) from the Tulips on Troost fundraising bake sale, which goes until 2. For more details, see troostavenue.com.
