Batik Lesson

The textile art on display at Johnson County Community College’s Regnier Center (12345 College Boulevard, Overland Park) belonged to the mother of someone famous. Ann Dunham’s Indonesian Batik Collection showcases works once owned by President Barack Obama’s late mother, who was an anthropologist. Carolyn Kadel, program facilitator of international education at JCCC, says the Javanese traditional batik “uses natural materials such as cotton or silk that are washed then treated with wax and dyes in artistic patterns.” Jo Randolph, adjunct professor of interior design, talks about the batik process at 3:30 p.m. in room 270 of Regnier. The collection of 22 textiles (which opened Sunday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m.) remains on view until March 12. Exhibit hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except Wednesday, March 10, when the exhibit is open from 3 to 7 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call JCCC at 913-469-8500.
