Snap Judgments

In a first-impressions world, Chicago art critic Lori Waxman still wants to get to the point a little sooner. So she invented 60 Wrd/Min Art Critic, an approach to evaluating visual art that’s part performance and part rhetorical mind-fuck (and part admonition of the usual critical suspects). Explanations of her methods and principles require way more than 60 words and a minute, but the idea is simple: Artists otherwise toiling in a recognition vacuum show their works to Waxman (by appointment: e-mail critic@60wrdmin.org), and she provides a free, signed review that can be called “published” (and isn’t necessarily favorable). Kansas City is the sixth stop on her abbreviation express; with help from Grand Arts and Urban Culture Project, she sets up shop today through Saturday at UCP’s Project Space (21 East 12th Street). The shotgun assessments start with two sessions today (noon-2:30 p.m. and 4-6:30 p.m.) and continue through Saturday.
