Jeff Harshbarger’s Alternative Jazz Series at RecordBar (1020 Westport Road, 816-753-5207) is a church service for jazz freaks. This installment brings Indian-American woodwind artist Aakash Mittal. Based in Boulder, Colorado, Mittal is poised to break into the national jazz scene with top-notch saxophone, flute and clarinet chops and a progressive approach to modern jazz composition. His new album, Videsh, is a 12-movement suite inspired by Mittal’s visits to his father’s homeland to study music and explore his heritage. “The Street” conjures a bustling urban marketplace, with saxophone and guitar sparring and weaving like a mongoose and a cobra in a traffic jam. In “Om Shanti,” a bowed bass sways over delicate flute and guitar figures before kicking into a gentle funk groove. Expect to be transported when Mittal takes the stage, backed by an ensemble that includes drums, bass, electric guitar, electric tambura and sampler.
