CHARM OFFENSIVE

Unlike other wealthy families, the Lords don’t need outsiders like reporter Macaulay Connor (James Stewart) to take them down a notch — they do it well enough themselves. When Connor arrives to cover the high-society wedding of high-strung Tracy (Katharine Hepburn), he finds chaos: a philandering father, a lecherous uncle, a long-suffering mother, a precocious kid sister, and an ex-husband (Cary Grant) who drops in just to keep things interesting. Stay for a drink? Of course — who wouldn’t want to see how The Philadelphia Story ends? The fourth annual Downtown Lawrence Film Festival celebrates the comedies of Cary Grant with free screenings every Thursday through July 8 on the City Parking Garage at Ninth Street and New Hampshire. The fun begins at 8 p.m. with live music, prize drawings, and free popcorn for the first 200 people; the film shows at 9:15. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets.
