His Kung Fu Is Stronger Than Your Kung Fu

Credited as producer on more than 300 films between 1955 and 1985, the now 103-year-old Hong Kong mogul Run Run Shaw truly rules a media dynasty. The company he began in 1926 ceased film production after his brother and co-founder Runme died in 1987, but the Shaw brothers’ cinematic legacy includes some of the most thrilling kung fu films of the 1970s. Of particular note are the talented martial artists known as “the Venom Mob.” They band together at 6 p.m., when 1978’s The Five Deadly Venoms screens at the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library (625 Minnesota Avenue, 913-551-3280). The film series Old-School Kung Fu continues on Thursday evenings in January with 1979’s The Kid With the Golden Arm and 1978’s Invincible Shaolin and The Return of the Five Deadly Venoms.
