Matt Lowe, senior media strategist at Crossroads, slows down to talk Columbus Park and Bill Murray in The Pitch‘s Q&A
Twitter handle: @Loweski
Hometown: Chicago
Current neighborhood: Columbus Park
What I do: I work as a senior media strategist at Crossroads (the public-relations partner agency to Barkley) helping our clients tell their stories in the most engaging way possible. In my spare time, I serve as the president of the Columbus Park Community Council, advocating for one of the best places to live in all of Kansas City.
What’s your addiction? Running, coffee
What’s your game? Bocce ball. I never played before I moved to KC, and it’s become a summer ritual. It’s relaxed, you can involve your friends and, best of all, you can drink the whole time. It’s a wonderful game.
What’s your drink? A Manhattan.
Where’s dinner? Taqueria Mexico on the Boulevard, or the Columbus Park Ramen Shop. Josh and Abbey-Jo Eans killed it with this restaurant.
What’s on your KC postcard? A sunset view from Riverfront Park.
“Kansas City got it right when … ” It made being a young entrepreneur attainable. There is a great support structure in place, from tax incentives and support organizations that help spur and coach these businesses. From our fantastic brewery scene to tech start ups, it’s exciting to watch.
“Kansas City needs … ” To expand the streetcar line, hopefully with a line down Independence Avenue. Offering service to that corridor would have an immense impact on the Historic Northeast and KC in general. Accessibility for those who will benefit most — that is what’s important.
“As a kid, I wanted to be … ” Shortstop for the Cubs and, later on, point guard for the Bulls.
“I always laugh at … ” Inappropriate jokes and really dumb jokes. Dad jokes always get me.
“I’ve been known to binge watch … ” Comedy Bang Bang. That is one of the weirdest, most original and hilarious shows to ever be made. Also, Love, with Paul Rust, is amazing.
“I can’t stop listening to … ” The Roots.
“My dream concert lineup is … ” The Roots, Smokey Robinson with headliner James Brown (the Roots acting as backup band for everyone). Special guest: the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
“I just read … ” Broken Monsters, by Lauren Beukes. Lauren is from South Africa and paints a portrait of a Detroit in decay that is realistic, has great plotting and maintains an atmosphere of creepiness that is just awesome. If you liked Season 1 of True Detective, you’ll love this novel.
What’s your hidden talent? I can impersonate Tone Loc really well. Like, dead on.
What’s your guiltiest pleasure? That I take pleasure in other people’s guilt.
The best advice I ever got: Don’t worry about your mistakes or get stuck in regret. No one is thinking about what happened as much as you will. Get over it, and move on.
Worst advice? “Ninety percent of the game is showing up.” No, it is not. Showing up is what people do at the DMV.
My sidekick? My kiddo, Josie.
What is your spirit animal? Garfield
Who is your hero? Bill Murray, Walter Payton, my mom
Who (or what) is your nemesis? Complainers. Complaining to me is a sign that you are out of your mind. You do realize that you can actually do something about the issue, right? It’s fine to point out that something needs to be fixed, but if you’re not offering a solution or offering to help … just stay quiet.
What’s your greatest struggle right now? Slowing down. Relaxing can be difficult because I always feel like there is so much I need to do. But the reality is, almost all of it can wait.
My favorite toy as a child: Legos, of course, and Nintendo’s Tecmo Bowl.
My dating triumph/tragedy? Meeting and marrying my wife!
My brush with fame: This is my favorite. In high school I met and had drinks with Bill Murray. I was invited to a political fundraiser where he was the guest of honor, and my friend’s dad knew how much I idolized him. I bumped into him in the bathroom, we struck up conversation, and he ended up taking me to the bar and ordering cocktails. The organizers kept trying to get him onstage, and he’d just wave them off and order us another cocktail. I even asked him, like an idiot: “Are you sure we should be doing this? Those people seem angry.” He laughed and said, “Trust me, bud, they’ll wait for me.” He even included me in his speech. It was really cool.
My 140-character soapbox soapbox: Kansas City highway system users, I beg of you, stop this weird habit of everyone going 45 in all three lanes!
My recent triumph: Helping to get a client on Good Morning America. That was a big win.
