McMansion permits losing value as school enrollment predictor

Before home sales went into the tank, school officials in Johnson County used new housing permits to try predict their incoming enrollments.

Headcounts have come trickier to guess in the new economy. Relying on housing permits as a guide, Blue Valley schools administrators underestimated the 2009-’10 enrollment by 250 students. District officials believe that more families are doubling up or living in apartments.
