Jazz Beat: Sunday Jazz Brunch, with Gerald Spaits

Sunday jazz brunch — with quieter, more intimate music that accompanies your meal and that you can talk over — is growing in popularity in Kansas City. The Broadway Jazz Club was first, followed by Chaz on the Plaza in the Raphael Hotel. Take Five Coffee + Bar has added brunch to its new location and, starting this weekend, gives it a twist. One musician will anchor each Sunday for a month, joined by a different ensemble every week. March’s host is bassist Gerald Spaits, who regularly backs stars such as Marilyn Maye and Karrin Allyson. Sunday, he’s joined by pianist T.J. Martley and saxophonist Matt Otto. Jazz from this trio would be an exceptional start to any week, and Sunday morning, you can kick things off with a mimosa or two as well.
