Flier of the Week: Hull at the Riot Room

Gravity Ink did this amazing watercolor painting for tomorrow night’s Riot Room show. Combining equal parts impending doom and beauty, as well as strength and fragility, it’s the perfect match for the bands playing.

Touring acts Hull, Salome, and Batillus are all noted purveyors of doom, as are local openers Stull and Auternus. The touring acts are in the midst of their “Beard Destroyer” tour, which I imagine is the logical step prior to having one’s face rocked off (especially considering the hirsute faces of most doom metal fans).

I’ve featured Stull on this blog before, but Auternus is a new discovery for me. Harper handed me their CD, Changing Seasons, last time I was in the office, mentioning that he’d heard good things. Yeah…I can see why. Take the Appleseed Cast‘s epic soundscapes, and turn them on their head. Rather than going for lovely themes with melodious guitar lines, Auternus downtunes their guitars and makes musical portraits of a world in flux. It’s doom, but it’s closer to Explosions in the Sky than Black Sabbath. Grab a copy of Changing Seasons on their MySpace page or at the show tomorrow. As we go from summer to fall, it’s the soundtrack to a seasonal shift.
