Your Weekend Won’t Suck
Here’s a roundup of some of the noteworthy shows this weekend that didn’t make it into the preview coverage in this week’s Pitch music section.
FRIDAY
Recycled Sounds Farewell Roast at the Record Bar. Bid store owners Kurt and Anne a fond farewell, wishing them good luck as they embark upon new life-chapters — and then kick them in the shins for closing their beautiful fucking store. Just kidding…sort of. Jam out to the sounds of soul specialist Superwolf as he’s joined by local hip-hop legend Joc Max and DJ Frank, whoever that is (my bet is that it’s Frank Alvarez, longtime RS employee). Live funk band Cherry Stone also plays. If you were down at YJ’s this past Mardi Gras, you saw them kick out the jams under that tent while the guy whose costume was made of fireworks blew himself to hell. Good times, always, in KC.
The Wilders at Knuckleheads. The most charming old-school country-pickin’ honky tonk band in the region — if not the whole U.S. of A. — is back with a new album. Catch some cuts from Throw Down and throw back a few beers. The Midday Ramblers open the show.
SATURDAY
Day on the Hill, outside the Lied Center in Lawrence. Few people in town are talking about this, but, shit, Spoon, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Ghosty, the Belles and other good acts are actually playing in Lawrence this weekend. It’s free to all KU students but costs only $10 for interlopers. God bless student unions. Read about it here.
The Leo Project, Sidewise, Changing Faith, Moire and Modern Day Zero at the Hurricane. Face it, it’s been too long since you’ve taken a big bite outta some skin-peeling heavy metal. These bands are some of the heavy music scene’s best — I can especially speak for the Leo Project, Sidewise and Moire. Raging tides of riffage combined with anguished vocals that range from operatic to lycanthropic. Wear your Maiden shirt and get screwed on PBR.
Rob Zombie at Memorial Hall. OK, I can’t really recommend it or anything, but Rob Zombie’s at Memorial Hall today. Just thought you might like to know. His new album debuted at number five on Billboard’s Top 200. If anyone’s up for moving to the safety of southern Chile, call me.
SUNDAY
The Life and Times, Traindodge and Magnet School at the Record Bar. Some say they’re great, some say they’re Shiner-lite; in either case, KC’s The Life and Times, led by ex-Shiner frontman Allen Epley, is passionate about the music it makes and is worth seeing live. Tourmate Norman, OK, band Traindodge banks more heavily than the L&T on carefully crafted riffs, welding them against complex rhythms and nigh-hardcore vocals.
