The Early-ish Word
I know it’s Tuesday, but looking ahead I see a few shows that probably won’t make it into print but that deserve early notice. If you know of anything coming up that you’re excited about, post a comment. I need all the help I can get.
WEDNESDAY (as it tomorrow), SEPTEMBER 6: Roman Numerals, the Stills and Kings of Leon at the Madrid This is a big Camel cigarettes and 96.5 the Buzz event, so naturally I’m having to creep in the back door. But you or anyone else can probably get tickets easily by finding a Camel guy at a bar, feeling him up and grabbing a couple of tickets while he moans in ecstasy. Ew. No! Actually, you might want to see if they have tics at the Record Bar.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14: Munly Munly at the Record Bar, with the Lee Lewis Harlots and American Catastrophe. I don’t know Munly, but evidently they’re big outta Denver, and judging by Munly’s Web site, the band’s onto that whole humorous-goth-Deadwood-19th-Century-eloquence vibe, which would make them good companions to AmCat. Munly seems to have put out an album as “Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots.” Here’s a story from the Denver Post about the sexy freak.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22: Guster and Nada Surf at City Market Long live the mopey late ’90s! Actually, Nada Surf still has quite a following of apologists who all say there’s so much more to this band than “Popular.” As for Guster, well, you tell me.
This Just In!
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3: The International Playboys at the Replay Lounge I didn’t discover this grimy, Missoula, Montana, speed-garage band until after they’d come through town supporting their 2004 release, Sexiful, which is a big, hairy, balls-jigglin’ collection of real rock and roll, like the MC5 on meth. It also contains a jaw-dropping cover of “If I Was Your Woman,” by Alicia Keys, I think, but originally written by someone else. I’m spinning their new one, Snake Blood Hangover now, and while the title is better than the previous, it’s a bit tamer. Sexiful gets so fast you can’t even tap your foot. For a good example, go here and download “The International Playboys get a bottle of wine, go to the beach and get fucked up.”
