Jazz Beat: OJT, at Green Lady Lounge

Ken Lovern’s OJT — Organ Jazz Trio to those unfamiliar — has a new album out called New Standards for the Green Lady, and it’s a doozy. Lovern’s roisterous Hammond B-3 organ, Brian Baggett’s dripping-with-blues guitar, and Kevin Frazee’s quick and supple drums turn pop standards into jazz standards with exceptional delight. “Eleanor Rigby” hasn’t been this much fun since Ray Charles recorded it. You want “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” riffing with both anguish and joy? You’ve got it. There’s a lightness to this music that can make your shoulders sway in rhythm and pull you right out of your seat. OJT has been a regular at Green Lady Lounge for the past couple of years; Friday night, the group returns to light up the joint.
