Jazz Beat: Lisa Engelken Quartet, at Take Five Coffee + Bar

Lisa Engelken’s singing possesses a distinctive clarity and a bold dynamism. A dash of funk and an abundance of attitude mark the opening number on her new album, Little Warrior, and her voice soars with a playful sass on the album’s second tune, her take of the Cars’ “You Wear Those Eyes.” A long way from her native Big Skies, Kansas, where she was the youngest in a household of 13 children, Engelken now lives in San Francisco. Saturday night, Engelken returns to her home state for the local release of her album at Take Five. She’s joined by Kansas City jazz masters Roger Wilder on piano and Gerald Spaits on bass, plus San Francisco drummer Matt Swindells.
