Incoming: The Zero Boys at the Record Bar, April 17
When I was looking at the Record Bar’s website, seeing if they had anything interesting coming up in the coming months, I saw that on Saturday, April 17, they have one of my favorite bands of all time playing: Indianapolis’ own the Zero Boys. I yelled “HOLY SHIT!” so loudly that somebody walking past on the sidewalk heard me through the living room window.
Kings of buzzsaw guitar-fueled punk, their debut album Vicious Circle is so amazing, it’s been reissued now fewer than three times, on labels as diverse as Toxic Shock, Lookout, and (most recently) Secretly Canadian. The title track, alongside “Trying Harder,” “Livin’ In the ’80s,” and “Civilization’s Dying” are the sorts of songs that ought to be as well known as the Dead Kennedys’ “Holiday In Cambodia.”
They started playing reunion shows about five or six years ago, and I never thought I’d be fortunate enough to see them play around here. In a fit of pique, I inquired as to what it would take to get them to play a show out here. As I recall, the guarantee, airfare, and lodging were more than the cost of my car.
However, now they’re playing here — on a Saturday night, no less — with the Sex Offenders, Dark Ages, Shred Scare, and Der Todesking opening. For $10, this is the best show you’ll see all year. I guarantee you.
