When shelter’s full, the clock is ticking for unadopted pets

If you’ve been thinking about getting your sweetheart a pet for Valentine’s Day, there are some dogs that would really appreciate it if you’d get on that today. Halfway Homes, the facility that handles all abandoned and captured pets, is reporting that they’re reaching capacity and will be euthanizing animals who haven’t been adopted.
Because the shelter has to accept all animals left there, once the shelter reaches capacity, they have no choice but to put down those cats and dogs who haven’t found homes, regardless of age, disposition or health. Even if the animal hasn’t been in the shelter for long, and had few opportunities to be seen by potential adopters, once the shelter is full, it’s full.
Shelter management says black dogs and pit bulls are the slowest movers, and that most dogs are in the shelter about a month. Many of the dogs listed on their Web site were adopted as puppies, then brought back by owners who had second thoughts a week or two later. Adoption costs range from $50 to $100.
