Artists: win $4,000 designing a thing to hand the Kansas Citian of the Year

Attention, visionary: Here’s a chance to impose your aesthetic on a local do-gooder’s living room. For the sixth year in a row, the Greater Kansas City Chamber of

Commerce has put out the call for an original piece of art to offer the

winner of its Kansas Citian of the Year award.

In conjunction with the Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City and the

Charlotte Street Foundation, the chamber asks artists submitting proposals to “design an original piece that reflects their

interpretation of Kansas City and its most prominent and influential

aspects that will be presented to the Kansas Citian of the Year.” A copy of the piece stays on display in the chamber’s art collection. The commission pays $4,000.

Proposals are due July 16. Details on the chamber’s website, along with pictures of the previous five winners — most of which seem to interpret a certain bureaucratic clusterfuckness among the city’s prominent and influential aspects (true!). In a good way (such as Michael Schonhoff’s 2006 piece).
