Prairie Village Jazz Festival, at Harmon Park
Normally, you would see the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra performing within the elegant confines of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts — though you might not find them accompanied by tap dancers there. Saturday’s Prairie Village Jazz Festival pairs today’s premier Kansas City big band, led by music director Clint Ashlock, with tapping brothers Lonnie and Ronnie McFadden for a finale that oozes fun. (Lonnie McFadden taps across the piano bar at the Phoenix nearly every Friday. Together with his brother, the duo has toured with the Count Basie Orchestra.) Also on the schedule: singer Angela Hagenbach, drummer Matt Kane with his Kansas City Generations Sextet (an ensemble of some of the best young jazz musicians in KC), trumpeter Stan Kessler and Horacescope (playing the music of jazz great Horace Silver), bassist Tyrone Clark & True Dig with singer Lisa Henry, and vibraphonist Peter Schlamb with his quartet.
