KCK Archbishop sent $10K to repeal same-sex marriage in Maine

Archbishop Joseph Naumann

Campaign finance reports from Maine show that a Kansas Catholic organization headed by Kansas City, Kansas, Archbishop Joseph Naumann was among the largest private contributors to repealing gay marriage in Maine.

The diocese in Portland, Maine, received more than $550,000 in contributions to help campaign against the Maine law granting marriage rights to same-sex couples. The Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas gave $10,000. The November 3 vote swung in favor of repealing marriage rights by almost 53 percent.

According to the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas’ Web site, its mission is to “promote the spiritual mission of the Catholic Church by encouraging stewardship. Collaborate with parishes and institutions to develop additional resources and support. Build endowed funds to ensure the vitality of the Church and its ministries. Steward responsibly the funds entrusted to the Foundation.”

It also offers equity portfolios for investors who want their investment strategies to “adhere to Catholic socially responsible principles.” Archbishop Naumann is the Foundation’s only member, and relies on the guidance of a board of professional Catholics to make investment decisions.
