Do you live in a trash hot spot?

Illegal dumping on Montgall Avenue

I originally started thinking about trash after I passed a junk pile splattered across the curb on Troost Avenue for about the millionth time. The busted couch, the dirty mattress, the old TV all sat there for weeks. Then months.

When I started digging into how we handle our trash in Kansas City, I discovered that, even if we get these illegal eyesores in check we’ve got bigger battles ahead.

That stole the focus on the story I wrote this week. But city officials are still trying to turn up the heat on people who violate trash etiquette and vomit their debris onto the right-of-way with little regard for their neighbors.

Last week, in a meeting with Mayor Mark Funkhouser, the Public Works department presented several maps based on February data showing where trash is being dumped.

That trash heap on Troost did get cleaned up, but now I’ve got my eye on another junk pile — right next door to my apartment. I called the 3-1-1 Action Center earlier this week. I’ll post a blog if and when it gets collected.
