Former Star publisher Art Brisbane gets shredded for doing his job at The New York Times

  • Art Brisbane is taking heat for asking questions.

Former Kansas City Star editor and publisher Art Brisbane was hired to be the public ombudsman for The New York Times. It truly is, as The Pitch managing editor David Martin called it at the time, “one of the sweetest gigs in journalism.” His job is to read The Times, look for questionable ethics, listen to problems readers have with coverage patterns, and generally make the nation’s paper of record even better.

But when you have a job probing for weaknesses on the mission to improve quality, you’re likely to tick a few people off. Brisbane did so with his column on Saturday when he questioned the Gray Lady shifting more and more resources to DealBook, a section within The Times‘ business coverage that started out as a newsletter.
