Happy 45th Birthday, Kwanzaa!
Happy Birthday, Capricorn/Capricorn Rising* (Dec 21-Jan 19): Last week, I regaled you with the 12 days of Christmas. This week, it is the seven days of Kwanzaa. These seven days represent principles to build family, culture and community. Day two is called Kujichagulia (koo-jee-chah-goo-lee-ah), Swahili for “self-determination.” Even when you have inherited wealth, you do not value yourself unless you have worked for it. Doors open, but it is your walking through them and using your discipline that increase your net worth. Fortunately, your bootstrap-a-pulling nature is getting more major bootlicking from expansive and abundant Jupiter projecting his heft from compatible and fun-loving Taurus. Your luck depends upon recognizing opportunities that you passed by or have been ruminating on since the end of last summer or early fall. As long as your remember the fourth principle of Ujaama (oo-jah-ma), “Cooperative Economics” a.k.a. scratching each other’s back, you’ll heap a number of rewards. Sometimes Wal-Mart is a no-no; it takes money from the local business communities.
Aquarius/Aquarius Rising*(Jan 20-Feb 19): Your sign is intimately connected to subcultures of all kinds. Usually you have a mental “thing” for those who are marginalized from the mainstream. You thrive on the third principle of Ujima (oo-jee-ma), “Collective Work and Responsibility.” Without a well-working team, your larger gifts fall into the hands of the corporations that provide some stability, but very little in the realm of exceptional self-expression (except for the original owner) for its workers. Taking your Aquarian mind beyond itself can be relatively easy in theory, but the daily world of working at something you enjoy and with people who are in the same neighborhood of bright as you can elude you. Start off small, with a passionate vocational project, and alert the social networks regarding said passion. Then, expect others to show interest in working with you. The latter is the hardest part – the patience required to wait for others to “get it” or your ability to see only what hasn’t happened yet. Refuse to become a slave to precedence. Just because something hasn’t occurred yet doesn’t mean it won’t ever occur.
Pisces/Pisces Rising (Feb 18-Mar 20): The first day of Kwanzaa has you written all over it: Umoja (oo-mo-jah) “Unity.” You live for the daily swim in the mainstream of utopian artists, writers, romantics, a regular bohemian reality lover. Even when you button down or suit up, there’s one fish who longs to be free to connect to whomever they please. As your sun sign, you were born to learn how to see everyone as one. If Earth were a school, you’d be getting grades in your one sight. Please channel the spirit of Master Marley and “one love.” It’ll make your life simpler in action and in deed. It is difficult to say or ascertain what thoughts constantly swim around in your mind. But whatever they may be, repeat to yourself, “I am enough.”
Aries/Aries Rising* (Mar 21-Apr 19): Two weeks after the first Kwanzaa celebration, Super Bowl I was played. The Chiefs went but lost to the Green Bay Packers 35 to 10. Connection? In 1966, Kwanzaa was a first, like Super Bowl I played on January 15, 1967. You are a first, too (and it wouldn’t be a bad idea when you have a confidence crisis to remember whatever first accomplishments you have made in your past). The first day, Umoja, means “unity” in Swahili. It is this collective unity that you fight for your cherished individualism, which leads to Kujichagulia (koo-jee-chah-goo-lee-ah), or self-determination. Without your pride in self and your accomplishments, how could you show up at the table of your chosen community without joining in for Collective Work and Responsibility a.k.a. Ujima (oo-jee-ma)? At year’s end, you are called to show up and to show the way. It is through accepting your personal responsibility to be of integrity and authenticity that we follow you. However, the pitfalls at present occur when you prattle on about your losses or blame others. You are not perfect, but taking reflective action is perfect for you if you’ve been reflecting on how your actions affect us. Simply place a little fifth principle into your cultural mix: Nia (nee-ah), “Purpose,” and all’s well that ends well … continued in Taurus.

Taurus/Taurus Rising* (Apr 20-May 21): Begun in Aries. You take what was started in Aries and build upon it, similar to Collective Work and Responsibility (Ujima, oo-jee-ma) leads into Cooperative Economics (Ujaama, oo-jah-ma). No one is going to tell you how to spend or receive money. Oh, yeah, let’s talk about the Support A Taurus program. You’ll allow those you like to help, as long as they don’t get too demanding – or worse, try to change or rush you. Invariably we want something you don’t want to give. Enter stage right, the fifth principle of Kwanzaa: Nia (nee-ah), purpose. You have to either use the facilities or leave them (a.k.a. shit or get off the pot directive). Making the transformation from “what have you done for me lately” to “God bless the child who’s got his own” requires the sixth day of Kuumba (keh-um-bah), “Creativity.” At its worst, it has been called “robbing Peter to pay Paul.”
Gemini/Gemini Rising* (May 21-Jun 20): Being the potential wordsmith that you are, Kwanzaa is Swahili for “first fruits of the harvest.” As analytical as you are, I mandate you incorporate the first day Umoja/unity and the last day Imani/Faith. The alpha and the omega of these West African principles ring true in your mind’s eye. You see, you are exceptional at taking things and people and places apart, not so good at putting them back together. Early winter exacerbates this tendency. Imani (ee-man-nee) becomes very necessary to your soul’s well-being. To accept nonrational answers (or to even not ask the question in the first place) can ensure an unexpected but more prosperous outcome. Particularly in the arena of abstract thought and making long-range plans, faith helps. Your first fruit is created through your mind’s willingness to know that we haven’t seen the best of you yet. Your best may not be the second coming, but given correct timing, who’d care?
Cancer/Cancer Rising* (Jun 21-July 21): Forty-five years later, Kwanzaa may seem outdated in a world alive with such multicultural energy. However, simply knowing how radical this tradition was for a people and culture with more than their share of hard knocks, you can easily get a feel for their resiliency. You know, if not nothing, tenaciousness. Self-determination or Kujichagulia (koo-jee-chah-goo-lee-ah, day 2, December 27) resides within your soul, particularly when backed into a corner. In a working team of an intimate relationship or family, it’s day three or Collective Work and Responsibility that keeps you loyal, even when you have reason to abandon the group. Sure, you have thought of anger and frustration. It is important to withdraw and reflect on what you will act upon. Let goodwill-producing Jupiter get a steady pace of movement before you fly off any independent handles or heat up kitchens that are already hot enough. There are those poised at the ready to help you. Assess their motivations and you’ll act accordingly.

Leo/Leo Rising* (July 22-Aug 22): It is the precise and uncomplicated mixture of day seven, Imani (ee-man-nee) or faith, and day two, Kujichagulia (koo-jee-chah-goo-lee-ah) or self-determination, that comprise a life’s mission of yours. You must believe in yourself to create something out of nothing. The more challenging endeavor is standing by what you’ve made without apology or excuse, even when we don’t understand or accept it. I’m so sure that the Arab leaders looked at Tunisia with a jaundiced eye of disbelief until the revolution/reformation of Arab Spring came to their country’s doorsteps. Worry not, those closest to you sometimes won’t understand your mysterious ways, oh, you fountain of godlike spirit. Maybe, just maybe, we desire to perceive the seriousness of your intentions. That takes time, and the less focused you’ve been or the more histrionic, the less likely we’ll alter our perspective.
Virgo/Virgo Rising* (Aug 22-Sept 22): Whenever the word “work” is spoken, your eyes can light up. It is so beautiful when your love light shines, and being useful makes your day. You have enough on your proverbial plate as it relates to day three, Ujima (oo-jee-ma), Collective Work and Responsibility. Like your sibling sign (Gemini, both Mercury-ruled), you must integrate faith into your daily routine. Aiding you in this task is Ujaama (oo-jah-ma), or Cooperative Economics, and Nia, or Purpose. Jupiter opens up foreign but prosperous pathways. Mythologically, he is the king of the gods, hailing from Mt. Olympus. Pragmatically speaking, he controls (rules) the largesse that naturally occurs when we pool our resources together freely and openly. Whether it’s familiar or communal living, he hails from your ninth house of the “higher” or super-conscious mind, abstract thought, travel to far-reaching lands (or those close by who house folk of a different culture than yours). You possess visions that can be practically realized. Simply get to work (well, knowing you, it is the continuation of what you’ve already started).
Libra/Libra Rising* (Sep 23-Oct 22): You’re like Austin Powers whose mojo has been lost. Umoja (oo-moh-jah), or Unity, has a root of mojo within it. Sure, it’s different languages, but work with me. Mojo is that inexplicable mix of magnetism and electricity. You have the capacity to join with anyone you’ve got a mind to do so. It’s the weighing and balancing that slows down your actual choosing, which freezes your mojo like a Panda bear. Once you locate your Imani/Faith, you start to exhibit more confidence. This self-assuredness doesn’t have to come from your appearance; it can come from your ideals, your belief in something higher and purer. Paradoxically, you must look in the mirror and accept your appearance. These “first fruits of the harvest” (what Kwanzaa means in Swahili) begin with your realizing just how much you have to offer us, other than being a trophy or escort. Mojo is sourced through authenticity, an essential trust of what you are worth. If you must behave icily, model yourself after an Inuit (nose rubbing, anybody?). To demonstrate an alternative manner of affection hurts no two (or more) consenting adults.
Scorpio/Scorpio Rising* (Oct 23-Nov 21): You have a couple of extra refills on the collective and cooperative prescriptions. Therefore, day three and four steadfastly belong to you. Ujima (oo-jee-ma), or Collective Work and Responsibility, merged with Ujaama (oo-jah-ma), or Cooperative Economics, to comprise a healthy Scorpio harvest. And a fertile crop from you categorically means that everyone benefits. It’s like you are the rain. Does the rain ever stop to consider where its water will aid growth? Hell, no. However, you must (no use of conditional may here), you must create – hello, Kuumba (keh-um-bah), or Creativity – your own resources. Once you have something or some service to offer to the collective, you won’t be tempted to live off others, therefore lessening the collective worth. If you’re waiting for the world to catch up to what your Kuumba is offering, work at something else to take care of your survival needs (period).

Sagittarius/Sagittarius Rising* (Nov 22-Dec 19): Oh, greedy and adventurous you. You’d have a celebration each day of Kwanzaa. I ain’t mad at ya. Just wanting to point out that you want to focus and choose which principle or fruit you’d want to harvest. Save some for the rest of us, please? OK, I give up. Leave the Cooperative Economics to the tribes of Taurus, Aquarius and Capricorn. Yours blazes through your consciousness through the guise of Imani (ee-man-nee) or faith in Swahili. You put on a brave and happy-go-lucky face, but underneath it all, you can have doubts about your abilities and how you’re being perceived. Courting Imani gives you the self-assuredness you desire, like mortar placed into bricks to solidify a building’s foundation. There’s nothing wrong with creating more prosperity with those three earlier mentioned signs. As a matter of fact, these three can be very instrumental in creating a better bottom line, financially speaking.
