The Grisly Hand
Western Avenue EP
(self-released)
Context: A four-song EP of backwoods boot-stompers from the folk-rock darlings
Highlight: The title track, with its buoyant vocal harmonies and Waylon Jennings echoes (“The Wurlitzer Prize,” especially), is the finest song the Grisly Hand has recorded to date.
Conclusion: “Black Coffee,” a clattering old-timey Americana tune, is the only other new song on Western Avenue. Half the EP is, thus, covers: a soulful, twangy version of Radiohead’s “Been Thinking About You” and a faithful tribute to “Still Feeling Blue” by Gram Parsons. More originals, please.
